Ok well think about it, I mean I could be wrong there may be levels large enough for it to be really useful, but from what I've seen of the dropships, they are big and hard to manouver, not the most ideal craft to play in. While I do see the appeal of this, I have no doubt some mod maker will have you able to pilot the dropships in no time. What I mean is that within the constraints of the story and multiplayer games, I would guess that Bungie has found that flying the dropships while amusing created a lull in the action that just didn't fit well with their vision. If there isn't a need to carry around a bunch of troops over a large distance then why would you want to use a dropship ? Take movies for instance, how often is it that the guy piloting a helicopter or plane that gets the main charactors somewhere as a main charactor ?
