In Response To: Pessimism ... don't read this ... (Jester)

: My world is falling apart ... or maybe it's Halo's world that's crumbling.
: What's the point of giving us a 10,000 km figure on Halo if it means
: absolutely nothing?!?! Here's an idea ... don't make claims that you
: couldn't (or wouldn't, because I think you could have) keep! Yeah sure, it
: will be a good game, but it could have been a great game. Halo had a
: vision which the competition couldn't touch ... and slowly it's been
: scaled back, retouched, "polished" into just another game. I
: used to tell my friends about how great Halo was going to be ... they were
: excited ... all this freedom!

10,000 kilometers is a detail that the producers of Halo added to stimulate your senses and give you a feel of size when reading about Halo. All authors do this; it's what makes things more interesting. The average computer is not capable of seamlessly rendering well over 100,000 kilometers of space with the detail that you find in Halo. By the way, if you're wondering where I got the 100,000 kilometer figure, you should better familiarize yourself with mathematics. Anyone who expected to fly non-stop around the entire Halo is daft.

I often find myself wondering why people think Halo has gotten worse. The graphics have gotten better. The AI has gotten better. Polycount counts have probably gone through the roof. The environments have larger scopes and are more detailed. And don't start on internet multiplayer. It is in no way Bungie's fault that Microsoft did not have a plan for online play in time for Halo. Even if the original concept for Halo was different, which none of us know for sure, it would have been nothing but a dream. A seamless world like some of you envision is, as of yet, no more of a reality than being able to shoot lasers from your eyes and freeze things with your breath.

I know it's been said before, but I'll say it again. The main reason that you think Halo was different before was because we were only shown scripted movies. Now that you're seeing real, live, clumsy people play Halo, it somehow doesn't seem as epic... or does it? Just for the record, Halo will apparently have those same scripted movies that everyone loved.

: (*echo of the word "Oni" rings in my ears*)

: I'm sure Halo will be successful. With the marketing power of MS, "Dirt
: Clod in a Box" could sell millions. But it will never be what we were
: told it would be way back when there was only one screenshot. It sort of
: reminds me of "1984". The masses are fed great news, when behind
: the scenes they are getting less and less.
: Bungie WILL NOT RULE THE WORLD ... EVER! They've just lost it.

You were told even less back then than you're being told right now, so how can you judge? And one screenshot? It makes sense to assume that Halo was nothing BACK THEN.

: Alright, let the flames begin. Before you post "Bungie doesn't owe you
: anything" or "Get off the forums dumbass" or "I'd
: rather have a polished game than have a great conceptualized, poorly
: executed game", answer this question: When does Bungie ever admit
: they were wrong? When do they apologize for anything? You know, there are
: companies that are actually honest with their fans. Chris Taylor (Founder
: of Gas Powered Games / Total Annihilation) actually gets on the fan forums
: and explains IN DETAIL (*coughMATT*) why something is being pulled or why
: the game is being delayed. I'd like to see Jason Jones on these forums.

Apologize for what? It's 3:00AM here and I'm tired...

So in conclusion, I don't recall Bungie ever making claims that you could fly seamlessly around the entire Halo, toy with the jeep's suspension and change the spark plugs, or go anywhere in the game at anytime you wanted, completely disregarding the story.
