In Response To: Re: Fool me once (Miguel Chavez)

: I hope it's OK that we have these little 'talk around each other' battles
: here instead of Narc's own space, Mr. Wu. :)

: It would definitely help because there's less "THAT'S NOT IN THE GAME,
: CHETZ!" gnashing from the folks out there that don't understand how
: game development works.

And you pay attention to those? Does Bungie?

For my part, I don't. Those people don't get it, they're just whiners. They'll find something else to whine about.

: Hindsight is 20/20, sir. If the demo was... hmmm, playing as Arbiter, going
: camo, sneaking up on the heretics... or let's say, playing as MC, seeing
: him hijack a ghost and then a wraith. Yah, I'm sure it would've been a
: really *dry* experience.

No, certainly not that. However, I don't think I'm alone when I say that the emotional impact of, say, the E3 2003 video is on a completely different level from anything the player actually experiences within the game. I think the arguable point is, how much of that is merely due to the difference in the two media (cutscenes versus gameplay) and how much is due to the changes that were made?

I also don't think there are gameplay moments missing-- like those you cite-- that could have created such an impression. The scale simply isn't there. Calling in an air strike, the rolling firefight in the Warthog, which although it takes place inside a smaller area than the one in, say, Outskirts, somehow seems larger.. etc.

: Says you! We aren't all aesthetics that are parsing the granularity of the
: experience. Most folks just want to see some kick-ass action as a taste of
: what *they'll* be doing in the privacy of their own homes Real Soon Now.

I'm sure there are. But I've also bumped into lots of people who got more pumped by those videos than actually playing the game.

: What was the 'demo' of Halo 1? I wouldn't go with the original 'before xbox'
: demo obviously. Am I off base (or just losing my memory) thinking it's the
: demo of Silent Cartographer? Driving a jeep INTO the inner chambers was
: pretty rousing moment, I think.

I was thinking of the pre-Xbox, E3 2000 demo, yes. That video hits emotional moments that I think the original game does (though through different events) and that the second doesn't. But that's a separate discussion, I think.

On that point, I've often wondered why all of humanity's defeats are either left to the books or take place off-screen, while on-screen all we get is the Master Chief's own victories. (His defeats, of course, may be many and repeated, but are fleeting.)

We get to play the Chief as he escapes the PoA, which is defeated-- but we don't see it crash. The Fall of Reach is relegated to the book. We see groups of marines perish during the game, but never that many in one place.

In the second game, the Covenant are basically outnumbered at Earth and have to flee. Their only victories are the destruction of two MAC guns, which is largely an impersonal thing-- we just see dots blow up on the viewscreen.

The Human-Covenant war is supposed to be one we're losing-- a desperate fight in which the Master Chief is the best weapon against superior numbers and technology.

Instead of that drama, in the game we get "kicking ass in outer space."

That line is supposed to be dry and nervous-- a soldier's defense against his own doubts. Instead, it's bragging.
