Because I've got a second...

In Response To: Re: Fool me once (Miguel Chavez)

Ya, I'm already wondering why I'm typing this but...

The Halo 2 trailer represented for me exactly what I had hoped the next installment would be, and it fit pretty well with where I thought we'd come into the story after reading the books.

I know the super Halo story fiends will no doubt rip me apart on this but as a fan who loves the story, I thought the trailer was perfect. :)

I also thought the E3 demo was right on, tying right to where I thought we'd be: on Earth, kicking ass.

Enter the game. Sorry folks, it's just not what I thought we were going to be given. It was awesome, don't get me wrong. It's just not what I expected, and so I started out with a preconceived notion of where I thought the story would be going. It's amazing at this juncture that I still wince, waiting for the 'Halo 2 is freaking perfect you piece of ungrateful crap!' folks to tear into me. :)

Halo 2 campaign WAS fun, the levels are mind-blowingly beautiful (the level designers deserve on HECK of a bonus if you ask me), the overall mechanics of the game were amazing (the way the characters walk, hold and use weapons, etc.), but still, nearly a year later, I still feel much the same way I did months ago when I posted here and said that it just doesn't 'grip' me the same way the first did.

This is opinion people. I'm not arguing the point, because there's no point to argue. It's simply my opinion, and my reaction to the game.

What would your reaction be if you asked yourself, "How would I feel about the game if there were no XBL component?" Of course the reaction of some is a given (see above), but for many (like me), it's just not something I'd play through time and time again, like I have (and still do) with the first game.

Random thought #1: I would daresay that there are people floating around this site that, given some time, could create an alternate plot for Halo 2 that would probably make our collective jaws drop. Was the Halo 2 story good? Sure it was. Jaw-dropping? Na, sorry. Some of you (many perhaps) would say that the story of Halo 1 wasn't either, but that's another discussion...

Random thought #2: I think it would be cool to gather up a group of trusted fans, have them sign an NDA that's got some teeth in it, and then have them review and then frankly discuss the game story. If you don't like the term 'focus group' then call it something else, but it would give you an overall impression of how your work (as a writer) is going to be received. In many cases this wouldn't be wise, but in this case, when you've got LOADS of people who are VERY dedicated to the story and the game, I think it could work. Heck, for all I know, they did this very thing. As I said, it's a random thought.

Ok, I gotta quit. Rest assured that I realize that some of you will no doubt twist this (again) into something akin to 'Ducain says he hates Halo 2', but rest assured that this time...I won't care. :)

Cheers all.
