In Response To: Re: Fool me once (Miguel Chavez) Let me sum up my opinion on the trailers vs. gameplay issue for Halo 2 in one sentence: The problem isn't that Halo 2's gameplay is bad, it's that the trailers were too damned good. Now to unpack that a tad. The Halo 2 E3 trailers are the best pieces of promotional material I've ever seen. They're the best that my friends, most of whom don't own Xboxes, have seen too. To quote one upon first viewing; "I'm a PS2 guy, and I don't like first-person shooters, but that [SP demo] trailer has me pumped." Those trailers are masterpieces of short-fiction in their own rights; the timing is impeccable, the storylines tight, the dialog sharp, the acting superb, the animation astonishing, the cliff-hangers gut-clenching. They're "Mona Lisa"s in the marketing genre, and any ad-house would give them pride-of-place in their demo reels. It takes a heck of a product to top them. For some, the game didn't. -- Steve unabashedly loves Halo 2's campaign, but understands how it might not meet the expectations of some after those jaw-dropping trailers. | |
