Re: What's meant by "conservative"?

In Response To: Re: What's meant by "conservative"? (SPARTAN-01110101)

: Anyway, if "banning" violent video games is by definition
: conservative, why is it almost exclusively liberals who seek to ban them?

Exlusively? Come on, the right has plenty of the action. It was the Bush appointed FCC chair fined $7.7 million last year, versus $48,000 before he was appointed. Hell, in Georgia they religious right is still trying to ban BOOKS! Nevermind games.

: If "banning" anything is conservative, why is it that liberals try
: to ban guns, while conservatives don't?

Okay, let me revise that: pretty much banning anything is "conservative". Happy?
Here's another: why do liberals favor killing fetuses and not convicted murderers?
Why do conservatives trust corporations with more freedoms than they do individuals?

: Many of the things you mention were brought about also by
: "conservative" values.

Thats a nice blanket statement that is also completely false (and voting records of Congress to prove it).

Federal Civil rights: Conservatives at the time argues that it violated states rights, and "God's Law".

Womens sufferage: Ditto.

Environmental protection: Conservatives said (and still say) it restricts free enterprise. Remember the late 80's when they were saying that there's no such thing as Global Warming? Even the conservative Drudge Report is actively reporting about global climate change.

Food safety laws: Again restricts free enterprise, never mind there's rat feces (and bodies) in your beef.

Anyways, I understand your arguement: liberals are trying to ban games...so they are bad.
I am trying to say, Democrats are trying to ban games....which is a conservative stance (like Clinton did with NAFTA, and the Kyoto treaty), but I don't see a strong Republican voice saying no. Don't let the matrix fool you, it's still politics.

Banning and status quo are (historically and presently) conservative hallmarks. A counterbalance to idealist liberals. The "reason" and "passion" of american politics. Reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction. (with apologies to Gibran)
