For my two cents, the most frustrating part of the debate over mature content in games is that its defenders are perceived as extremists. Gamers have always had an image problem; we're seen either as youth without mature decision-making capabilities or as adults who "haven't moved on".

The interviews so far have been with a lawyer and two men whose occupation is producing web-based comics about video games. Being deeply involved with the Internet and comics are the only two things that could give them even less credibility with the average American than video games. (Please note that I'm not impugning either artist--VG Cats and Ctrl-Alt-Del are great.)

Both the artists have come across as casual, funny, interesting guys, which is an overwhelmingly positive image and one that makes me glad they're speaking (basically) on my behalf. On the other hand, I'm not certain it's enough to overcome the basic image problem. The comparison is a man who claims to be a lawyer, and on the face of it appears to be defending basic American values and protecting our vulnerable youth.

The third opposing viewpoint will come from a man who devotes considerable time, effort, and money to a video game fansite--which, again, is not an avocation that starts him out with a whole lot of credit in the eye of the public. (Let's all hope to God they never find out about the whole goat thing.)

My devout hope is that he'll be understood as an adult with a "real job" and a parent who believes it's his own responsibility, rather than that of a group of lawmakers, to determine what's right for his children. I don't think the artists' tone was inappropriate at all, but I think a more serious turn from Wu will strengthen the position of all three anti-Thompson pieces.
