Actually, the Scandinavian languages and Dutch are both Germanic languages - it's just that the Scandinavian languages split off from the Germanic trunk much earlier, and of course Scandinnavia is much more isolated from Germany than The Netherlands. Finnish is another story altogether - it's a completely different language unlreated to any other European languages except for a narrow band extending down to Hungary. English, for what it's worth, is also Germanic, but it's heavily corrupted by the Romance languages as well as more obscure influences.

No, I'm not a linguist, but I travel a lot and am fascinated by languages, even though I don't have a good ear for language and can pick up only the barest rudiments. BTW, my wife speaks several languages passably - she's like a sponge for languages, which is one of the things that attracted me to her ;^)
