	In Response To: Re: Dutch for beginners (Johannes Gunnar) : So it's always fun to read the finnish part of the Halo manual (and other : manuals) outloud for someone... it sounds like gibberish, and it drives : everybody crazy. ;-) While spending a summer in Japan, I once complained to one of the graduate students that Japanese was so difficult for Westerners to learn because of the written language - the Konji, as they call it. He pointed out to me that he can read Chinese - he can't speake it, but he can read a Chinese book or newspaper and understand nearly all of it. His opinion was that an idiomatic written language is therefore far superior to the phonetic writing we use. Although he had a valid point, I should point out that Japanese spend all of their primary and secondary education learning just the 2000 most common Kanji.
