In Response To: Re: Status (C Lund) : I did with the landscapes, in the hope of reducing the jerks that happen when
Video cards don't understand PNG or JPEG, so Aleph One has to expand them to full 32-bit raw images in memory, to load to the card. You wouldn't notice any difference in jerkiness, since Aleph One decompresses them to the same in-memory format before the level starts. : Since I'm on the topic of in-game jerking when new graphics appear on the
Textures are decompressed at level load time, but they are not loaded onto the card until needed. Aleph One is fairly inefficient at that second stage: it doesn't do things like padding to powers of two sizes, scaling, mipmap generation, etc. until it goes to load them to the video card. It also does 2 or 3 unnecessary memory copies, which are pretty slow on G4s due to their glacial front side bus. I've fixed some of this (padding and scaling are done at decompress time, copies are not done unless necessary, mipmaps are generated using the video card hardware when possible), so in-game loading of old format textures will be a little better in the upcoming release. Our memory footprint should actually be a little lower, too (I think this is the first time ever). : (have you played the xmas-sub, btw? Best eye-candy since Tempus Irae) I tried but after 15 minutes of running around twisty corridors with just my fists, I got fed up. I never got to see any of the eye candy, which I assume is in later levels. I sure would like to see a high res version of Tempus Irae done for Aleph One. *sigh*
