not stop the flood from living, but stop them from spreading. stop them from enslaving all life. and if i had to restort to a tactic as pitiful as suicide as the only way of defeating the foe, i would begin research to find a REAL solution to the flood problem, the rings was not a victory for the forerunner, it was a stalemate, so that means more reseach is needed to achieve victory, if the flood are different enough to be immune to the halo rings. i would send all my reseaching power on finding a way to explot that difference to make it so that halo only kills flood.

do we know where the flood came from, no. they could have came from a different galaxy, in which case, there would always be the possiblity of the floods return (aside from those keep for research)
