In Response To: Re: Newton's Laws (Mark Levin)

: I think the Index is indeed a physical object. At the end of The Library, the
: Chief picks it up, and 343GS removes it with his energy arc. It's bigger
: than he is, so I'm guessing he has a small built-in teleporter which he
: used to move the Index to his "closet" or something. At the
: beginning of Two Betrayals, the Chief gets the Index back and plugs it
: into the console, where it remains until the end of the game. The Index
: Cortana can be seen holding is a holographic representation of it Cortana
: generated, perhaps to indicate what she was talking about. Also, I don't
: think Cortana is directly affecting 343GS's thrusters, I think he lost
: control over them due to his surprise, anger, or devoting all of his
: attention to fighting Cortana inside the Core.

Isn't the control panel a hologram though?

Its interesting the way it interfaces; cortanas chip seems to be absorded into the panel much like the index, and can be plucked from if in a similar way. This means the physical unit is teleported into the computers own internal "closet" or suspended in the panels energy feild. The Forerunner hologram/energy projection abilities are very advanced- they can generate a bridge of energy which acts like a solid so it is possible that the index is some form of holgram energy form, then again it may not be, theres not enough evidence to conclusively say either way
