The details read "Composed of superheated plasma", but David Ellis said "It’s big, it’s made of hard light, and it will wreck your world if you’re not paying attention to your surroundings." Again, I believe this is just a brain-fart, and given the crunch they're under, a highly forgivable one. There does exist the possibility, however, that they retconned the distinction between the Covenant controller plasma tech and the Forerunner hard light tech. This would throw Wages of Sin under the bus (and kind of tick me off).
