: Hunh? I don't see MS as the villain of this piece, particularly given the
: fears I recall at the time of Uni/Fox cranking out another Aliens vs.
: Predator turd-in-punchbowl flick if MS hadn't kept tight hold of creative
: control... and that the box office on a Halo film done right would've
: easily justified the costs.

I'm way with you. I'd much, much, much getting a potentially good Halo movie made not made at all than getting a mediocre Halo movie actually made. I don't like to bash Hollywood because about as many great movies come out of Hollywood each year as do from indie sources. The trouble is that there's also a huge amount of shit. That's understandable, though. They make money and they entertain people, usually even if the movie objectively sucks. Transformers is an objectively bad movie, but it still entertained me and was worth my time and money (the first Transformers, anyway). In that case, I really have no objections at all to a Michael Bay-quality director getting the rights to Halo and making a ton of money off of the name. If it makes a ton of money, then people must see some sort of value in it.

However, Halo is more personally important to me than Transformers. And I don't want to see a subpar Halo movie even exist. I think a lot of it is that I don't want other people, people outside of our cliques, to see it and get a bad impression of Halo or something like that. There's an element of not wanting to tarnish the legacy or have to look back at a Halo product and say, "that was made by people who wanted to maximize profits with minimal care," something that every single franchise seems to have at least a few of.

That in no way means that I think Hollywood or Microsoft or whoever were being malicious (or even greedy, but what's wrong with that?). I just think there was a communication gap. In creative industries like Hollywood, there's a rule of thumb. You can make a movie good, quickly, or cheaply. Pick two. Obviously I'd LIKE to see a good Halo movie before the series becomes irrelevant, presumably after Halo 6. But that requires a lot of money, and that requires studio support, and that requires studio input. We can't eat our cake and have it, too. In this case, I'd rather just have no movie at all, and that looks like what I'm going to get. But you can't fault Microsoft or Hollywood for wanting to make a (big) profit. If they were to make a Halo movie that all of HBO and Bungie just hated the fuck out of, but it still made a ton of money, then they deserve all that money, because people enjoyed it.
