What I like about that article is that (I think - never played Blops) it's talking about gameplay, not the final cutscene. I think there's a tendency to define ending as "final cutscene" which doesn't really work for me.

For me the best endings are ones that convey the most through the last gameplay segments. So Reach's ending is one of my favorites

As I said last night:

"Consider: we're on a Halo board. I'd argue most of what Halo evokes is done through gameplay and art and sound, the key strengths of video games. Reach's Lone Wolf is a great example. What it has to say is said mostly through the level; the cutscene just caps it off."

It's not number one for me - number one is the final Snake v. Ocelot battle in MGS4.
