I never saw much intrinsic value in the choice of ending for Reach. It struck me as the only, inevitable, natural way to end the game, hardly something that deserves much applause in and of itself. It's like applauding a chef for remembering to put lettuce on a cheeseburger.

Also, I hugely dislike many aspects of Reach's ending's execution.

The end of PoA couldn't possibly have been less climactic or interesting on a gameplay level.

The first time I played Lone Wolf, I experienced the bug/feature/whatever whereby dying, especially out of bounds, can sometimes revert you to the start of the level rather than end it, which was a bit jarring to say the least.
Even when the level functions correctly, it's a mess. The RtB barriers are small not just in an absolute sense, but also relative to the gameplay area layout; I got the sense that even if the Covenant's weapons are what struck N6 down, his real killer was the RtB gods. Throughout the fight, Bungie decided to apply bizarre interface-killing mechanisms whose application is extremely choppy and nonsensical (excuse me, but did anything just happen in-game that would explain an insantaneous application of a shattered-glass overlay on my screen?).
When you do finish the fight, the cutscene decides to... finish the fight again, in a ridiculous over-the-top action sequence that's trying as hard as it possibly can to be dissonant with the moment.

Suspension of disbelief? Immersion? Nope.
