I was implying that the use in Reach is like having a comedic straight man without anyone being especially funny around him. The point is: How often does he act as a foil? In interactions with Kat. That's about it. Seriously. I think you're giving the writers too much credit here. I really don't think he was designed to make the other characters shine, nor does he really achieve that end beyond being someone for Kat to tacitly challenge. She can do that with a disembodied Noble Actual. I find it hard to see him as anything else other than a trite stock character among other slightly more interesting stock characters.
