It also puts the fate of the characters in their hands. Makes things feel a lot less like you're running around form point A to B until Halsey hollers and tells you kids to put away your toys and do something important, and a lot more like these Spartans are aware of the gravity of the situation and are trying to deploy their resources in the most logical way. I always got the sense that the UNSC didn't micromanage Spartans all that much. Putting Kat in charge like this is great stuff. These subtle changes to the script go a long way.
