It's : like a straight man in a comedy, except nothing's funny. Why not compare : the characters to a house plant? As a former English teacher I may be making assumptions, but I can't help but wonder if you understand what a foil is? I mean, you're right on track with your comparison to a straight man, but when you imply that such a role is necessary for only comedy you're ignoring an dramatic device that dates back to Beowulf (and before). I think the proof is in the pudding in terms of Battuta's efforts. By making one of the most interesting characters (or you might say the spunkiest) the leader, Kat's now cracking wise all over the place, but to whom--a radio? Carter does exactly what he, as a leader, is supposed to do. He hears the concerns of his subordinates, offers a measured (adult) response, and makes sure they all don't degenerate into a bunch of adolescent whiny-butts. Without him that's what they are in danger of becoming.
