In Response To: Re: Why is Cortana so important in Halo Reach? (RC Master) I think it's even simpler than all that. Cortana led the Pillar of Autumn to Halo, directly resulting in its destruction by Master Chief. The Fleet of Particular Justice failed to secure a Forerunner relic of unfathomable importance, which became the tipping point in Covie politics. It convinced the Prophets to supplant the Elites's role in the Covenant with the Brutes, in turn leading to the schism that helped humanity win the war. If not for the events of Halo: CE, there might not have been a schism in the first place. In fact, the Covenant would have eventually found a Halo on their own anyway. They would have unleashed the Flood and doomed us all. At best, the Covies could then activate Halo and sterilize the universe once more, but without the benefit of the Forerunner's painstaking safeguards.
