The story did the disservice to itself, as did the character - particularly the latter. It's not a sacred icon (har-de-har), and I think Carter's character at the very least needed a much stronger voice actor. I'm replaying the campaign on Legendary now and sorely wishing the character Carter didn't exist, because he's dragging everything down. The sort of changes you describe in your post are very easy to write around; you're assuming the other characters would remain static in relation to this change, but they wouldn't.
