In Response To: Re: They are basically equals (General Battuta) : This just seems like further evidence for Carter's redundancy. Cut him, make : Kat leader, make Jun or Emile (that'd be interesting!) the 'equals'. And at that point, you've shifted the dynamic of the team completely away from as it stands in the game. If you make Jun the second in command, you still make everyone just 'follow the leader' - noting that most of the missions were orchestrated by Kat (Nf, LNoS, NA) - or leave Jun orchestrating a sniper mission, from the rear. Just as one example of where you hit hiccups there. For Emile? The whole, repeated, interactions between him and 'the big man' are completely unacceptable from a military standpoint. The fact that Four and Five are on equal footing in the team allows for them to butt heads. For Emile's humane-inhumanity to play counter to Jorge's rampant empathy they have to be on even footing - no issue of rank. And you see those interactions overtly at the end of WC, more subtly at the beginning of LNoS, and the unexposed respect and bond at the end of NA. Not to mention the combat dialogue and vignettes during WC. And to argue specifically for Carter? Note the cutscene as Kat dies. The complete tonal change for the unit, Carter's position where he, basically, is done leading Noble Team. His posturing, how he carries Kat. Leading into the package the deliveries of his lines. He's not leading, he's following. Spartans for a Demo-Op? A Torch and Burn being a priority one? He's on autopilot. And as they enter Sword Base you start see him recovering, moving forward. Jun and Emile both deal with active frustrations, overt. He keeps his cool. Sorting out what they are supposed to do. He keeps the team in check. Then, as you venture closer to Halsey, he takes charge as he sets aside his personal woes for the greater good. I don't have the exact quote, but has Halsey speaks of the last great known hope to save humanity, and bows to a level so humble with a simple 'Please' - Carter locks in, and is back into the fight. Leading Noble team. But as the Package is passed, you note that he's still not at the 110% a Spartan is expected. But you can tell that he knew that his position was now to get Six, with the package, to the ship breaking yards. And he does everything necessary to that effect up to and including giving his own life. Earlier in tP, it's telling when Carter says that 'she made the right choice.' I don't know if it helps that I have a fair amount of military experience to note the details of these characters all the more so. What with how subtle they will be delivered. They are SIII's, but they're still Spartans. Still soldiers. To say Carter was redundant is a great disservice to the entirety of Noble Team, the player, and the story as a whole, if you ask me.
