In Response To: Re: I've become attached... (General Battuta) : I don't like the feeling that I have to work for this sense of personhood. All Bungie stories require work to fully appreciate; many of the threads and themes are intimated rather than stated, and have been at least since Pathways Into Darkness. It's rather late in the studio's life-cycle to start complaining about it now. : And I really cannot get attached to Carter. He feels utterly redundant to the
Kat would not have been free to make Carter's counter-threat to Halsey when threatened with the brig, at the end of Sword Base. This is important in that it preserves Noble Team's independance from Halsey; without that, then Noble would've been Halsey's to control through blackmail... making the story between Sword Base and The Package essentially moot. Leadership tasks would've forced KAT to delegate the hacking/technical stuff to another team-member; a combat leader can't afford to be heads-down on a comm link and lose situational awareness... in essence, it would've necessitated another Kat in the team. Kat's death is thematically important; just as she's warming to Six, blammo. That's not (IMO) by studio caprice, but rather to reinforce the sense of loss and of being backed into a corner that's necessary to the story's emotional impact. Kat and Carter make for a necessary duo, as each acts as an expository foil for the other. (The same way Jorge and Emile do.) Eliminating Carter without replacing him with a comparable figure would make exposition a lot clumsier. -- Steve could probably come up with more, given time, but there's a hint that the office network might be back up and running now. (Accursed rack failures...)
