Try to think less of Carter being the leader and Kat being second in comand an put them at the same level. They are the only original members of noble team left. Its less about Carter giving orders an everyone following. Instead, the relationship between Kat and him put them at equal levels since they have known each other for so long. You know that you guys would be complaining if Carter did nothing but come up with ideas and shout orders. It would be cookie-cutter and unrealistic. Carter's place in the squad feels right where it should be. He fills the leader role but still works with the team to come up with ideas. Another thing to conscider is what if Carter wasn't the original leader? What if he was third in command and the spartans before him where killed. Maybe Carter was thusted into this "leader role" wihout a choice. If you take that theory into account, his personality makes sense.
