But I've noticed a lot of people just have a problem with Rookie, and I think that if we just had those flashback missions, and a cheaper price, would the game be more liked storywise?

Rookie was just a soldier trying to find his team. Sure, he didn't speak, but he was obviously a PERSON. He wasn't a HUSK. Like Master Chief, in game he's this silent killer, but if someone were to write a book with him in it, I'm sure they'd make him a bit of a smartass. Just like Chief.
But unlike Chief, the Rookie doesn't have a history. Outside of his body language, he doesn't have much of a character.
You can't really compare him to Gordon Freeman.
Freeman, while having a background and being important, manages to be more of a husk than our vastly less important Rookie.

Also, Cody.
A lot of people like FFXII for the unique way it told a story, it was mainly Vaan that threw them off.
But that game had like 3 Main Characters.
Basch wanted to redeem himself and save Dalmasca, Ashe wanted to return to her kingdom and throw back the empire, and Balthier wanted to do whatever he wanted to do.
Not very far in the game myself.

Vaan was just there.
