In the end, having Buck as the final surviving ODST escorting : Virgil out of the city would have done much more for a grittier, harder : tone for the story then what we got. You brought up something that never occured to me--I never thought of the Rookie as the noncharacter he is. The Master Chief is that sort of "blank slate" that the player is supposed to fill out, but he himself is still a character. The Rookie isn't that--he's..nothing. He doesn't talk.. He doesn't do anything, asides from show up a few minutes before Buck does to help out Dare. Well, jeez, being 15 minutes early to the party doesn't really justify his existence. It's the thin line between making a "blank slate" and making a souless husk.
