In Response To: The ODST Narrative Structure and what went wrong (Cody Miller) Maybe ODST isn't meant to be a three act story... Because not every story is about the three act structure which we Americans so love and adore. If it is, of course it's not going to be a three act story in the normal sense because of the flashbacks, broken up stories, and the switching between characters. But for kicks and giggles, let's ODST follows the three act structure. There's quite a few characters though... But I would agree and say Buck is the main character, so we would have to go with that as being ODST's story. Act I - Buck is introduced along with his relationship with other characters. The situation is also set up. Goal: Bucks wants to regroup with his squad and get the hell out. Act II - Buck regroups with Romeo, Dutch, and Mickey. Act III - Buck finds DARE, Vergil, and the Rookie. FIGHT TO ESCAPE. Tension is built up. More and more Covenant are closing in. Glassing of New Mombasa. Escape. Buck and his squad flee New Mombasa. Actually, that fits quite nicely. But of course, there are missing pieces to fill up the story (mainly within Act II) since we are seeing most of it through the Rookie. Still, I'm convinced ODST doesn't truly have a three act story because there's much more to it than Buck's story. And I'm glad because it's great to see a story told in a different and unique way. The three act structure does work, but I am horribly sick of seeing it again and again . I love it when conventions are broken! On the note of ODST being noir, I think they did an excellent job in capturing the mood and visual aspects. I would say there are pessimistic elements though. It's just that they're found in Sadie's story (corrupt officials, many a vice, etc.). And about not playing as the main character Buck, well, I guess Bungie could have just gotten replaced the Rookie for Buck. There would be some story and game play changes, but I'm guessing it would have been about the same. You would just be playing as a different character albeit a more active character with stronger relationships and more outward emotions.
