Marathon certainly worked very very well with the player's character having no name/emotions/anything. But thats because the other characters were so strong and because the story was so good. All those AI's ordering you around via terminals had at least as much character as any of the ODSTs. And then both the orders they gave you and the things you did actually had meaning and a huge impact on the story. Being one of the driving forces in the story makes up for a lot. Sadie of all people had the greatest impact in the ODST storyline. She saved maybe hundreds of people when she let them onto the train. As far as I can nothing the ODSTs did had any bearing on Halo's overall story at all. Remove Buck, or any of the others and Regret still finds Delta Halo, the Covenant still unbury the Ark Portal and have their civil war, the Chief returns home and saves the day, and the Flood is destroyed for the foreseeable future. If you're going to give me a nameless, faceless character at least let him do something that matters. Nameless, faceless, and meaningless is not a good combination.
