It seems that some battles must have occurred, : but the Covenant probably spent a good deal of their time digging the Ark : Portal. : If you have read Ghosts of Onyx, you will note that several other Spartans : had been fighting on Earth for "Two weeks." They ultimately : steal one Covenant ship and destroy another. As for the specifics, though, : I can't say. The thing is, it's not exactly 1 month later. We know the New Mombasa Slipspace Event occurs on October 20th and the events of ODST take to the next day. One month 'exactly from Oct 21st would be Nov 21st., but we know the Chief lands in the Kenyan jungle on Nov 17th. So Johnson's talk with the Engineer happens on or before November 17th. That gives a rough date to when Johnson, the Arbiter and Commander Keyes returned to Earth (ahead of the Chief).
