Bungie seem to like straightforward, logical explanations, but I see : what you're getting at and the appeal. Yeah, I'm gonna go with the suit interruption thing, it's fairly logical and reasonable and doesn't require the viewer to suppose in some telepathy business that hasn't existed in the series up to that point. All of the Gravemind messages occur within flood levels, which can be explained by being in the presence of a high concentration of flood matter. He could easily talk to you through that, as he does with regular flood combat forms in regular combat situations anyway. All of the Cortana messages appear as sort of blips and transmissions and certainly don't appear to involve telepathy in any way. It's far more reasonable, within the scope of the game's story, to assume they are simply transmissions, rather than to complicate things and suppose an ethereal explanation.
