In Response To: Re: Beautifully stupid (Cody Miller) : Do you know how many people felt that way about Lord of the Rings before it : came out? Apparently those movies did quite well and were respected, even : by the hardest of hardcore Tolkien fans. Apparently, I'm harder than the hardest of hardcore Tolkien fans. The first one was actually excellent. Very few alterations from the original book, and everything just worked. The second one made some massive, unforgivable errors with the characters - it turned the Ents into lazy, passive creatures, instead of the patient, wise, slow-to-wrath creatures they were. That made me want to cry. It also completely destroyed Faramir's character, which very nearly *did* make me cry. Faramir and Boromir, in the books, are a wonderful contrast - Faramir knows his weakness, which in the end makes him stronger - he would not take the Ring, because he knows he isn't good enough or powerful enough to do good things with it, and he says so before he even knows Frodo has it. In the films, they destroyed this aspect of him to (I can only assume) make 'dramatic footage', by getting Frodo to Osgiliath, a place he *never* *went*. Let's not forget the complete invention of romantic interest from Aragorn to Eowyn. Yes, she was interested in him in the books, but he never showed a romantic interest in her. Again, violation of Aragorn's character, because they wanted more romantic tension. While I'm at it, what on EARTH were the Elves doing at Helm's Deep? They weren't there. They shouldn't have been there. End of story. The third one had some brilliant moments, but Jackson cut the Scouring of the Shire. This meant, among other things, he destroyed Saruman's slow devolution from a wise wizard into a ragged, pathetic creature, which is an important element of the series. Instead, he replaced it with an incredibly lame 'raving prophet gets spiked' sequence. Also, while Viggo Mortensen worked very well as Ranger, I didn't feel that he ever quite grew into the character Aragorn is meant to be in The Return of the King (this is probably impossible to do on screen, given what an epic, nigh-perfect character he is, but I think this was partly poor scriptwriting - make up less dialog, and use more of what Tolkien wrote, eh?). Without the Scouring, the book loses a massive part of its meaning and beauty - that section reflects the reality of life, which is that there is no paradise on earth, and even when you sacrifice everything you have to do it, you can't actually protect and preserve your home. sigh. There's more frustration from me about these movies, specifically because they could have been awesome. They got so close, but the fumbles the writers made (and the director, at times) were mind-boggling. At least one of the actors, in fact, consistently had arguments with the scriptwriters and directors about the alterations they'd made (it was Christopher Lee, iirc - I read about this in one of the official documentary books on the film). Instead, they were mediocre, but because they did the score and visuals so well, there's not really any point to trying to do a film adaption again. Maybe in fifty years or so, but I'm guessing no one will ever get as close as Jackson did. Jackson did better than I'd been anticipating - which is why I was so depressed by the second and third films. Apologies for the OT rant. -Nate (loves LotR, and is still sad about those movies)
