Sound in an atmosphere is just particles hitting something build to listen to vibrations like your ear or a microphone. Space is generally noiseless because it is nearly a vacuum. There usually aren't enough particles close enough together to transmit noise to an ear or microphone. But sound still works in space. Lets say you're in one large space station equipped with external microphones and I cause a second large space station near you to explode. You will hear the explosion. First off the metal bits and chunks from the exploded station could smack the microphones causing noise. But even cooler is that the air in the exploded station doesn't instantly dissipate. The air that was in the station will rush out in all directions as it tries to fill the vastness of space, and in the meantime some of that air will hit your microphones causing a whooshing sound. Think of the first level of Halo 2 where the defense stations explode outside the window and you can hear the explosion. That is completely possible. So in general space is silent, and you have to be close to things to hear most sounds, but sound does exist in space.
