No, of course not. But like the Chief's gloves, they change things because they can, not because it makes logical sense. As for their significance in Halo 3, it helps flesh out the deployment methods for the UNSC teams. The Pelican's certainly didn't make it, and we saw the Longsword go down. Unfortunately, the HEV pilots died on impact...did you notice the drag chutes are still intact on both HEVs? They hit HARD! I still haven't acounted for all HEV pods in Halo 2 yet. I know 11 dropped, but I haven't found 11 pods on the surface. I have found a few random ODSTs without pods nearby. At least in Halo 3's case, they bothered to design the 12 launch tube hatches for the HEVs at the aft-center end of the frigate. Nice touch.
