Real Artists Ship

Mat's tagged the essence of any so-called "business vs creative" conflict right here. If the time to "be creative" was unlimited, nothing would ever be finished or sold, and at the end of the day, whether they are art or not, videogames are products that need to be finished, shipped and sold, or else there's nothing to talk about.

So before anyone goes too far down the axis of "evil money-grubbing company forces creative studio to ship unfinished game" road, one might have to admit that from one perspective, nothing is ever finished until it ships, and given unlimited resources, some things might never actually be finished, because there's always room for improvement if you're enough of a perfectionist. And I've always got the impression that Bungie is practically bristling with perfectionists.

Perhaps its hackneyed by this time, but I'm reminded of a quote attributed to Steve Jobs during the Macintosh's development (or was it the Lisa?)

Real artists ship.

When the date to ship is set and by whom is probably still a contentious issue, but eventually it has to happen. I mean, does anybody think that Duke Nukem Forever is going to be a game that will be so good that ten years of development is justified? Does anyone even care anymore?
