bungie burnout | |

read the rampancy.net piece that louis posted on the front page. it might just be the way all those excerpts are strung together, but it really seems like bungie went through some really painful times after joining microsoft. I realize that this fits nicely with the stereotype of "big business squashes little guy," but bungie always has been (or at least come across as) an extraordinarily creative shop. there's lots of genius floating around in the air there. those two components function best when the pressures and vision come from the people who are doing the creating, in my experience. with halo 2, did bungie burn itself out trying to meet the expectations of a whole new level of management? is the process still fun for the people involved? because that's what it's really all about, right--enjoying what you do? I guess I worry a little that the studio that brought us so many groundbreaking, offbeat, thoughtful games is done, its edge dulled by the brutal production process of halo 2. I hope the answer to "what comes next" is "something completely different." |
