I definitely understand, though not from a Halo competition point of view. Pretty much all of my MP experience with xbox is on XBL. I've played through a few FPS games and in general have enjoyed my experience. The reason why, though, is because I play twice a week with friends of mine. One has a dedicated server and fast pipe, and we get online Thursday and Sunday nights and play. Some of us are decent, some aren't, and none of us would qualify as good. Still, week after week we enjoy getting together and playing.

My experience with random games seems to have fallen generally under a few categories.

First is the @#$@#$%^ obscenity games. These are when you have one or more players that seem to think that cursing everyone out there is the real purpose of the game. I've logged off more than once after getting tired of hearing 13 year olds cursing like a sailor and looking for attention.

The second is like what you experienced Nosolee, the "it's all about winning" crew. I don't usually stay in these games long enough to get booted, but it's happened several times where people have, after every match, booted the person with the lowest score. Seeing as how I don't play all that often, I get kicked off pretty easily in those situations.

The last set of games are the illegal substance enhanced games. Smoking weed might make the game fun for you, but not for the rest of us.

All this rant boils down to, it's just more fun with friends. That buddy list is a lifesaver, and generally I don't get into a game unless it's with some of the people I know have the same interests as me. I'm seriously pumped about Halo 2 and playing online with some of the people in this community that have some of the same ideas of what's a fun game of Halo (or anything else).
