limited lives theory + rambling

In Response To: Fear of Death: Punishment & Reward... (Xian)

One thing that I think is very cool, is a multiplayer game with some bots to make up numbers, and when you die, you take over a bot. It's like limited lives (ie where you have X lives to go through before you're out, where X is any integer), but not :]

it's most like that tank arcade game, where each TEAM had a limited number of lives they could chew through. however, instead of having the magic 'respawn' ability, you take over control of one of the bots that is ALREADY in the game.

this would only work where bots were in the game of course. and once you run out of team members the game is over. it was one of the best gameplay features of h&d.

I must say, as an aside, that all of us compare halo to tribes, tf, tfc, and rainbow 6. and are making comparisons to what tribes 2 and tf2 are going to be like. however, if i had to pick a game that looks most like what halo is shaping upto be, and would like to see done really well with the typical bungie treatment, it has to be h&d.

going completely off topic.

i played h&d through with my 2 flatmates at the time. there were no patches for the game when we played it. we played some missions 10 or 15 times due to the networking crapping out, falling through the map, falling off the back of the boat. all sorts of bugs, errors and frustrations.
the game should have taken us 2 or 3 nights of playing. it took us over a week. yet we continued to play it all the way through. though the game caused us all to reboot at least twice for every map, the teamplay and the gameplay was so addictive we put up with it.
if you haven't played Hidden & Dangerous, go out and buy it, download the patches, invite some friends over, and kick hitler's butt into next week. I think there is an expansion pack out as well, i have yet to try it, but i'm sure it's worth the cash. go out and buy that as well.

later
