Well...both, in the sense that that's one detail I try not to get too hung up on. XD;

I checked, and it seems that Thothandal mostly uses variant #1 until his merging in the present, then switches to variant #2 in the final level. (I think Thothandal using regular Thoth's emblem in one terminal was just a mistake.) Maybe #1 is to indicate when he's speaking more like Thoth, and #2 for when he's more like Durandal, if we were to rationalize a reason for the inconsistency.
