: On top of that, S'pht-Durandal guiding the main character would undermine the
: importance of the main character's freewill (which is clearly an important
: thematic element in the story), and it would also conflict with the
: declaration at the end that he is "destiny". You can't be
: "destiny" if someone else is the one showing you the way
: forward.

Free will is a thorny philosophical topic, but on the conception of it I side with, free will isn't a matter of just smashing through external influences, but every bit as much about mastering yourself, doing things in a considered way that is appropriately responsive to external factors, instead of just plowing ahead on some unreflective course of action. And that is very much something that external influences, guides and teachers, can help you achieve.

Point being, another character like Durandal-Thoth or whoever can be guiding the main character into realizing the power and influence that they have, developing their free will by helping them realize that they have different options and can be different than they are and so do differently than what they might otherwise have thought was the only viable thing to do.
