That last part is the closest to what I'm thinking. Tens of thousands of years ago Xio learned the mind-sucking trick from Oron while he was still alive floating in space, and used it on Metis, to terrible results, and said fuck no never again. Within maybe a few hundred years at most (probably less), Oron was frozen and lost in space. Tens of thousands of years later Virtuality exists and Xio is free of Metis in his mind and he could mind-suck someone and then dump them into Virtuality at that point, but Oron is long lost by then.
Meanwhile nobody else knows the mind-suck trick in the intervening time, and Oron could teach it to them, but it's proven to be a terrible weapon both for the person who uses it and the person they use it on, so he doesn't, because nobody should be able to do what Xio did to Metis, and Oron doesn't want to to end up like Metis did himself.
I could see, maybe, he might teach it to his wife Keie and have her suck his... mind. But I'm not sure she would be willing to endure that. Still, it's something I might think about.
