I know I mentioned this on the Pfhorums a while back, but this seems like it'd just make Chapter 5 even harder.
Dunno if these are directions you'd want to go in, but if you want to remove the PiD enemies and have at least some invisible monsters, I've got some ideas:
* The Headless-replacement you mentioned, except it sticks mostly to areas without other enemies and doesn't give off any visual cues unless it's moving. (I'm thinking of the kind of distortions that can give away cloaked Elites, but I'unno if Aleph One can pull off that kind of effect) Only upon death does it become fully visible, though even then it's impossible to tell what they really look like (shades of Enemy Zero).
* A visible non-PiD monster that resembles a distended alien nervous system, with a crystal somewhere in it that binds it to the physical realm. These could be turret-esque enemies that don't deal too much damage per hit, but have more HP than the other W'rknconstructs running around and can be a serious threat if not dealt with quickly.
(Note that, in terms of visuals, I have my take on the W'rk in mind)
This way you could maintain an obvious W'rk connection even without the PiD monsters. Maybe these things are what forms when the W'rk is getting dangerously close to awakening.

(I'm thinking of the kind of distortions that can give away : cloaked Elites, but I'unno if Aleph One can pull off that kind of effect) : Only upon death does it become fully visible, though even then it's : impossible to tell what they really look like (shades of Enemy Zero). : * A visible non-PiD monster that resembles a distended alien nervous system, : with a crystal somewhere in it that binds it to the physical realm. These : could be turret-esque enemies that don't deal too much damage per hit, but : have more HP than the other W'rknconstructs running around and can be a : serious threat if not dealt with quickly. : (Note that, in terms of visuals, I have my take on the W'rk in mind) : This way you could maintain an obvious W'rk connection even without the PiD : monsters.
