That is an interesting idea, but I don't think there would really be time for it, since Xio is super busy with trying to save humanity and then dying pretty much from the moment he learns Metis is on Mars until the end. : So his body is acting as a battery? or is it something else entirely? : Also, everyone's in RAM, then? Nobody's saved to disk somewhere? Those are the details I'm embarrassingly unclear on, but thanks for asking about them, as it helps to hear other people ask questions like that, gets the gears churning in the back of my mind trying to come up with answers. : How old is Vis, anyway? Would she be young enough for post-turning-and-dying : (and-possibly-not-really-in-her-right-mind) Sue to groom her for : fulfilling the prophecy? (I assume Tom would be keeping an eye on his : church.) I'm not sure what Vis's age has to do with Sue's ghost grooming her, but Vis is the vampire who turned Sue, so she's definitely already an adult by the time Sue's a ghost, if you're thinking Sue might've influenced her as a child. I do kinda like the idea of the ghosts of Tom and Sue leading Vis to her plan, but it doesn't really work because (before reincarnating and losing their memories) Tom and Sue would've known that Vis's plan was a terrible one. Vis isn't old enough to remember the world before the falling of the Darklight, she only knows the fragments of stories passed down as prophecy, and thinks that freeing the Queen of Hell (which epithet she doesn't even know) will help somehow save the world. Of course, she turns out to be completely wrong, and dies for it, along with the rest of the world, which she had no way of expecting, and neither did Murdock or his sister, but if they had had their memories as Tom and Sue they would've seen that coming a mile away and not let it happen. : Any other dead folk that would be clued in about uncorrupted avatars? Only if some other of the first generation of corrupted avatars had refused to reincarnate, and so had their original memories still in ghost form. Which doesn't seem to have happened. I do still need to figure out exactly what it was that made Tom and Xiuying so unique as to be the only people who kept far away enough from the gem-bearers that they were not corrupted. And also to figure out a way to tell their stories during the Falling of the Darklight, when what was unique about them in that time period was staying the hell away from everywhere the story action is taking place. : So this distortion varies with the corruption? or is this non-race specific? The perceptual distortion is not race-specific, but the psychological distortion is. And the ghost still look like after-images of the races they last were, through the distortion. So human ghosts look like shadowy human figures sadly moping around and speaking in whispered mumbles; orcish ghosts look like shadowy orcish figures thrashing about in a rage and "roaring" like a distant wind. I'm not entirely sure what vampire and elf ghosts are like, though I have some old thoughts on it written down somewhere, and the general trend is that more powerful beings leave less noticeable ghosts. : I'd actually been thinking more along the lines of "Who do they deem : unworthy?" : and, now that I think of it, "Can they actively prevent specific people : from giving birth by preventing all potential children from getting : near?" Ghosts can't really stop other ghosts from doing things, because they're incorporeal and shadowy even to each other. I'm not sure I understand your question about worthiness besides the answer I gave about Dwarves, or an unhelpful "it's up to the individual ghosts I guess". : Also, what's the closest point post-corruption to nobody being able to give : birth because the ghosts have run out? Ghosts can't really run out, because people are always dying. The reincarnation system does put a fixed upper limit on the population of the world though. Nobody can be born until someone else dies, and then gets tired of being dead. But people are dying all the time, and being dead really sucks, so it's not really hard to keep replacement-level birth rates up indefinitely.
