I'm sensing a lot of influence from Marathon Infinity there. It's the third installment of an established series that, up until then, had a linear and cohesive canon, and it's the most divisive one among the fanbase.
Imagine how it would have been received if it was the first and only storyline in the series.
That's sort of what this feels like.
A nonlinear story that jumps around can be done right, though. The first example that pops in my head to take notes from is Habibi.
Marathon Infinity is an alienating experience that only worked because a 20+year old site exists of fans documenting and unraveling the thing.
