The criminal gangs and the : robot guards vie to be the closest thing Mars has for authorities, and : Kron & Bros make sure to be in charge of both of them at the highest : level just so that they're in charge, but they're not actually there to do : crime like that, they're just hiding out in the only habitable lawless : frontier around, and making sure that they remain top dogs while they're : there. : Some kind of foreshadowing to Virtuality Transcendent would be pretty cool, : though I'm not sure how I could work it in to Tom & Xiu's stories in : the Otherworld series since they're just in the regular Virtuality : network. I do plan on rearranging a lot of the Otherworld series soon, and : I will need to find material to flesh out some parts of it that are : getting expanded, so maybe I'll mull over something like this for part of : that. Perhaps a scene with Joe/Xio interviewing Metis's former client, and having to sort out where he got slipped into (the Kron-controlled version of) Virtuality? And some reassurance that he is indeed in the real world. Perhaps Joe/Xio investigates Kron's Virtuality and discovers he need a few more failsafes for his own, some of which he only gets around to implementing once he's stuck under the rubble. (The others being infeasible inside Virtuality, of course.) Could also be another way for Kron to pick up on her presence there, if "this lady named Metis's willing to pay X for this guy, should we take it?" is too low-level a decision for Kron to hear of it. Back doors for everything. : Xio wasn't so much a Virtuality server himself, per se. I'm embarrassingly : unclear on how I want the technical details here to work, but it's some : combination of the Virtuality network itself being made explicitly : "apocalypse-proof" because it's (after)life-support for billions : of people (even though it by itself didn't turn out to actually be that : hardened, but nobody expected an actual sky-is-literally-falling : apocalypse so we're lucky it held out as well as it did); and Xio being : both personally immortal, and also having top-level administrative access : to the Virtuality system. : Essentially, having an undying superuser plugged into the semi-functional : remains of the Virtuality system inside the fallen Starbridges keeps some : small bit of Virtuality operational essentially directly under his power. : It's not running in his brain, or on his nanites, but his undying body : being plugged into it keeps some of the system online, and his admin : access lets him shuffle things around to operate entirely within that : remnant of the system before the rest of it goes offline. But unplug him : and even what's left shuts down, and even if you got the rest of the : hardware stable again first, his little bubble world would shut down when : he disconnected and take everyone who was moved into it with it. So his body is acting as a battery? or is it something else entirely? Also, everyone's in RAM, then? Nobody's saved to disk somewhere? : I hadn't really thought about it, but yes, probably. Vis had one of the Gems : and was obviously plotting something, so they were probably keeping an eye : on her. How old is Vis, anyway? Would she be young enough for post-turning-and-dying (and-possibly-not-really-in-her-right-mind) Sue to groom her for fulfilling the prophecy? (I assume Tom would be keeping an eye on his church.) Any other dead folk that would be clued in about uncorrupted avatars? : All kinds of ghosts are variously visible to each other and to the living, : but being a corrupted ghost is weird. Uncorrupted ghosts are just their : normal selves, but invisible and intangible and able to fly, growing : slowly more tangible and visible and massive as their old bodies decay : until they are alive again; but you can chat with an uncorrupted ghost : just like a living person. Corrupted ghosts are psychologically influenced : by the corruption, in similar ways that corrupted living avatars are : (human ghosts are depressed, orcish ghosts are enraged), and find : themselves viewing a distorted version of the world, while the rest of the : world views a distorted version of them. It's like the living and the dead : are seeing shadows of each other cast through a veil of dark water, : hearing muffled and distorted quiet echoes of each other's words. So this distortion varies with the corruption? or is this non-race specific? : It occurs to me now that you ask that nobody in their right mind would want : to be a short-lived Dwarf baby (human-orc offspring who can't survive : outside the island on the far side of the world where there's still : Darklight), but as above, ghosts aren't really in their right minds, so : maybe some choose to out of some kind of nihilistic impulse, maybe : thinking it's the closest thing to dying that the undead can get (to lose : all of your memories upon reincarnating and then immediately die again). I'd actually been thinking more along the lines of "Who do they deem unworthy?" and, now that I think of it, "Can they actively prevent specific people from giving birth by preventing all potential children from getting near?" Also, what's the closest point post-corruption to nobody being able to give birth because the ghosts have run out?
