: I agree with most said in this post. Also, Arrival is my favourite level in
: any of the Marathon games. It was the first level I played and I had never
: played anything quite like it before. It was creepy and very scary and the
: whole Marathon felt very spooky, dark and lonely. The only other human I
: could find was an engineer Bob hiding in a small secret compartment, and
: if you let him out he was running around in total panic. It felt like
: something very evil was taking place and an eerie sense of hopelessness
: was all around you. I didn't buy the first Marathon though, so I actually
: played M2 and Infinity before playing M1. I just played the M1 demo around
: 200 times instead (probably more).
: When I finally got the chance to play the whole M1 I must say I was
: disappointed though. The Pfhor fighters look best in M1 in my opinion. But
: most of the other enemies look rather childish. The Wasps look dorky, but
: most dorky are those weird brown little critters, which look like turds
: with insect legs. Most of the level in M1 look rather primitive too after
: playing Infinity, and rather dull. Also the lack of ambient sounds just
: make everything too silent and makes everything feel artificial.
I disagree. I think that the enemy looks in M1 are more interesting, and in a way, somewhat more realistic than the sequels. The ones in the sequels looked like they walked out Pokemon or something, in a way, to me, many of them didn't make me feel like I was fighting aliens very much, it was almost like I was really fighting a bunch of goons in childish costumes. I also think that M1 was VERY high-tech, I don't really think that MI's environment was all that different than M2's. I agree that maybe the ship could use a little ambient sounds, but bungie isn't all that good (well, I don't know, maybe they did good at this with Halo) with making ambient sounds, so they sound almost as bad as listening to static. I don't know about you, and I love ambient sounds, don't get me wrong, but I much prefer the background music. It added more emotional atmosphere than any of those dorky ambient sounds did, and I don't really think that the lack of ambient sounds was THAT bad. Besides, it added some spookiness to it, it didn't really need ambient sounds, the silence fits the environment in my opinion. I don't really understand why the Wasps seemed dorky to you, but I guess that's just our different tastes.
