In Response To: Re: The First Marathon Is The Best (Irritated)

Wow, this is probably one of the best threads I've ever seen at this forum. It's great how everyone can disagree and yet agree at the same time. No one's fighting anyone else, no one is desperately trying to convince others of anything, everyone's just stating their opinion, supporting it, and leaving it at that. And I like that.

: I've enjoyed all the Marathon games, but I actually would say that the first
: one was my favorite, even though I played it last. I think it had better
: atmosphere than M2 and Infinity. The dark corridors of the Marathon were
: more tense than the S'pht ruins, which to me always seemed a bit bland for
: an alien civilization. The most striking though is the evolution of the
: Pfhor ship. In the first game it gave an aura of gloomy magnificence; the
: ceiling lost in darkness and eerie light coming from the omnipresent
: slime. The music helped a lot too. M2's Pfhor ship looked like some crazy
: disco, and the Infinity version was pretty utilitarian in appearance. I
: also preferred the Hunters in Marathon 1. The later versions always seemed
: like they wandered off of a Hexen level. The first ones looked more
: insectoid, plus they had that cool howl.
: Marathon 1 also puts me in an oddly introspective mood. As I wander through
: the darkened corridors of the ship I end up thinking about what life was
: like there before the Pfhor came. Like the earlier posters said, it gives
: more of an emotional impact.
: But all the games are, of course, great...
