Yes! The lonliness. That's it! Although M2 is my absolute favorite, none of the games matches the lonly feel of M1. People talk about the dark, scary feel of M1, but most of all, there is a feeling of lonliness - you are truly all alone, not yet under Durandal or Tycho's control, battling an unknown enemy with no hope of backup support. There are no magnum or pistol-toting bobs. Until the end, there is no one to help you - just 3 AI's - one that is dying, one that is psychopathic and one that couldn't care less. You've hit the nail on the head.
