: I think there is a feel to Marathon one that the others lost, it was very
: lonely and maybe sad in a way? I liked that feel the most, but story
: telling wise and other physical aspects I think were much improved in the
: sequals. Also for me at least Marathon 1 gets some sort of boost in my
: mind because it was the first game I ever played. I can't say which one I
: like the most they were all great. So this post was pointless :)
I remember Neoptolemus kept saying that the story in Marathon 2 felt so much duller. And in some cases, that's right, but I think the story for M2 is pretty panicy and intense like around when the Boomer is crashlanded on Lh'owon's second moon, where you, the S'pht, and the BoBs were fighting a desperate, hopeless battle against the Pfhor. That was really well done, I think. Pretty much, Marathon 1 was pretty much one panic-inducing situation altogether. Marathon 2 (and Marathon Infinity) just had several different paces. On M2's first level, there's a sense of panic induced by the sudden drop into a fight, the sirens, and yet the level is also a little relaxed. For a while M2 is pretty relaxed, and then there is a bit of nervousness built up when Durandal talks about Battle Group Seven's Western Arm moving to attack Durandal, and then it got, in my opinion, pretty intense on the Boomer. I think that M1's action upon the Pfhor ship was actually kind of relaxed, no matter how many enemies you were facing. But in M2 the fighting was very intense. Then things lulled back down, and the arrival of the S'pht 'Kr produced another emotion entirely, although it still works out to intensity.
Marathon 1's story always confused me a bit, and I guess that's because I played it most when I was only 5-6 years old. Now that I look back at it, I think it's great. Overall, I don't know which I like best. Marathon 1 is where I actually feel at home, as I was raised with that game. But I love the others too.
