As I tried to point out in this post, there is a lower limit on the amount of time it takes to kill a newly-respawned enemy Marine with Magnums. The reasonably slow rate of fire, combined with the low damage, means that it is simply impossible to kill somebody in under a certain amount of time with the Magnum. I don't know what this shortest-amount-of-time is, but I'd posit that it's around 4 or 5 seconds.
It takes considerably less time than 4/5 seconds to say the phrase "Happy happy carnage carnage."

Interestingly enough, the shotgun is a surprisingly good sniping weapon. A Theta Error of 5, 10 bullets per blast, and 20-24 damage per shot all make for an okay surrogate sniper rifle. Sure, it ain't great, but it is surprising that it doesn't suck royally at hitting things at a distance.
And while I really don't know the outcome, I think I'd place pretty much even odds on a WSTE-M/Magnum duel, so long as ammo isn't a limiting factor and neither player moves at all.
However! This isn't a scenario you're likely to find in the course of a netgame. The shotgunning Marine can usually close this distance quite quickly, giving him (or her) a clear advantage.

This is exactly what a few of us have been saying. The Magnum isn't a panacea. I qualify this statement by saying that, due to the fact that most netmaps are more cramped and less sniping-prone, Magnums are in general less useful (less win-causing) than most of the other guns.

Bottom line: the Magnum does not suck. However, other weapons are better in a netgame because raw damage rate usually matters more than accuracy.
