I think the "pistol-bashing" originated from Counter-Strike. It was probably the first game with completely useless pistols with no advantages what so ever over any of the longer arms. Since that has been the most played game for many years now (I still don't see why), it's not that strange to see the unrealistic CS madness corrupt the gamers' minds.

Whenever a CS player plays another game (which happens very, very rarely), he still thinks he is playing Counter-Strike. I can't help but cry out in anger when I see a team mate switch his pistol for a needler in Halo, or prefer the ridiculously weak energy staff over the .50 caliber sniper-pistol for longrange combat in Unreal 2.

Thanks to the wonders of Counter-Strike, they have got the idea of pistols as weak, inaccurate, useless weapons you can fall back to, should you drop your butter knife and fail to find any rocks to throw at your enemy.
